it took my friend $2 to stand out

here’s a short story about my friend i thought you’d enjoy:

my friend scammed his way into jobs and all it costed him was $2

the funny thing is that he unknowingly proved how lazy job seekers really are

he’s one of the most street-smart people I know. this one time he convinced a middle eastern shopkeeper to sell him his entire shop

do you know how hard it is to negotiate with middle eastern shopkeepers?!

and he’d do it with a smile on his face, it would make the impossible feel possible

so one day he tells me he’s dropping his resume at a couple of companies but he’d left his resumes in his bag which was at my house

i rushed to mine, scrambled to get his bag, took the bus (could’ve taken the uber but we’re scrappy uni students).

on the way i think to my self, surely this guy has something interesting on his resume.

so i take it out of the bag and felt something was off about it. physically off. yeah didn’t make sense to me either. anyways i read it and thought it was a pretty average resume. below average if anything.

didn’t think much of it and luckily made it in time. a couple of days pass by…then he calls me out of nowhere telling me he got the job. i asked which company said yes.

he said all of them with that same smile on his face. i couldn’t believe it. after begging him he told me his secret

this guy had printed his resume on a paper that was HEAVIER than a normal A4 size paper on which everyone else printed out their resumes

recruiters would flip through piles of resumes and his would stand out - literally

all it took him was $2 and little bit of creativity to get noticed

99% of unemployed people would rather blame the economy for 6 months than try to stand out

my friend figured that he wanted to stand out from people who think comic sans is creative.

and when he did, his competition disappeared.

it's not about the $2 paper, it's about caring enough to try anything different while everyone else stays basic
